The High School Honors Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (HSHSP) is a non-credit enrichment program for mature high school juniors interested in science, math, or engineering, hosted by Michigan State University. The program is the oldest continuously running program of its kind in the United States and offers a unique experience for students to undertake detailed, focused investigation of challenging problems and participate in many dimensions of the research process. The primary objective of the HSHSP is to help students develop a deeper understanding of the process of inquiry and to allow them to experience living away from home with peers who have diverse backgrounds but similar interests. Participants spend most of their time working on research in one of the sciences, engineering, or mathematics under the mentorship of a university researcher. The program lasts for seven weeks, and participants are selected based on scholastic ability, maturity, evidence of interest in science, engineering, or mathematics, and completion of specified high school courses in science and mathematics. The participant fee is $4,000, but scholarships based on financial need are available.

Since 1991, the Summer Focus program has provided highly-motivated high school students in the Greater St. Louis area with funded eight-week summer research internships at the Washington University in St. Louis.
Each Summer Focus Scholar is paired with two scientists: a Mentor and a Tutor. The Mentor works one-on-one with the Scholar on a specific project in the laboratory, while the Tutor supports the Scholar throughout their research experience. Scholars also take two courses on strengthening their science communication skills and preparing to apply to colleges. The Vocational Internship Program (VIP) offered by Massachusetts Clean Energy Center places vocational high school students in paid clean energy internships during the academic year. By participating in this internship, students receive valuable work experience and get paid for their work during the academic year. They also get the opportunity to make connections and network with clean energy professionals, which can enhance their potential for future employment. The program lasts the duration of the school year, and students can start their internship after the session start date if this is agreed upon with their Co-Op Coordinator and the Clean Energy Employer. Participants will work with highly talented scientists and engineers to develop the skills needed to build a Doppler and range radar. The Malott Family Zoo Intern Program offers a seven-week paid internship program to Chicago high school students who want to learn about Lincoln Park Zoo and its efforts to promote animal and conservation science. The program provides students with the opportunity to interact with researchers and Animal Care staff, learn about potential careers in animal science, and create a culminating project while investigating informal education techniques and how to communicate conservation messages to zoo guests. Applicants must be Chicago residents, between the ages of 15-18 (by June 26, 2023), and legally permitted to work in the US. The program requires participants to be available for all training days, which occur during the first two weeks of the internship. Interested applicants can attend informational sessions or a job fair at the zoo or sign up for a virtual opportunity fair hosted by Adler Planetarium.
