About the role
The High School Honors Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (HSHSP) is a non-credit enrichment program for mature high school juniors interested in science, math, or engineering, hosted by Michigan State University. The program is the oldest continuously running program of its kind in the United States and offers a unique experience for students to undertake detailed, focused investigation of challenging problems and participate in many dimensions of the research process. The primary objective of the HSHSP is to help students develop a deeper understanding of the process of inquiry and to allow them to experience living away from home with peers who have diverse backgrounds but similar interests. Participants spend most of their time working on research in one of the sciences, engineering, or mathematics under the mentorship of a university researcher. The program lasts for seven weeks, and participants are selected based on scholastic ability, maturity, evidence of interest in science, engineering, or mathematics, and completion of specified high school courses in science and mathematics. The participant fee is $4,000, but scholarships based on financial need are available.
