The North Carolina Senate Page Program allows high school students in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade to get a hands-on experience in the legislative process of the state. Hired pages observe how laws are made and assist senators and staff members during the legislative session while working on the Senate Chamber floor. They participate in daily sessions, committee meetings, and perform duties that include delivering messages and materials within the legislative complex, answering phones in senators’ offices, passing out documents and running errands. The selection process is competitive, and senators are allotted a number of students they can sponsor each session. Senate pages must be sponsored by a member of the North Carolina Senate, in good academic standing, and submit their application to their senator. The program runs for several weeks throughout the year, and each page receives a stipend of $150 per week to cover expenses.
The YouthWorks Internship is a highly competitive and sought after program with limited positions. To be accepted to this program indicates an individual shows the drive to grow professionally and personally. This internship is more than just a job! While an intern will perform job assignments alongside staff members, they will also be given the opportunity to experience many different areas of the organization with the goal of providing practical experiences as a beginner in a professional environment. The Strong Future Las Vegas Youth Employment Program is an initiative that aims to provide workforce readiness training and employment to young people in Las Vegas. The program offers a seven-session course that covers important skills like resume writing, time management, interview techniques, ethics, and professionalism. After completing the training, youth are matched with summer or after-school jobs and are supported by adult advisors to encourage commitment to both work and school responsibilities. The program is designed to prepare motivated aspiring scientists for interdisciplinary cancer research careers. Under the mentorship of faculty and scientists in the Integrated Mathematical Oncology department, students are involved in research projects that are appropriate to their interests and abilities. HIP IMO provides access to required computer equipment and software throughout the entire internship. Selected students receive a $1,000 scholarship and are required to attend daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will gain oral presentation experience by designing and delivering a 15-minute presentation to department members and guests at the HIP IMO research day and write a three-page scientific report at the end of the program.
