Internships for high schoolers

Writopia Lab is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in New York City in April of 2007. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. High School interns serve as role models and provide workshop, editorial, and moral support to our six- to nine-year-old writers.

Barnard’s 2-Week Summer Food Institute introduces students to the U.S food system, examining food production, distribution, consumption, and waste management through four key lenses: agriculture; health, policy and justice; food systems and climate change; and soil health. Each week, students will explore farms all across the city and New York state to learn hands-on from farmers growing our food.

This program examines the interplay of science, medicine, and the experience of health and illness by way of epistemological questions—“How do we know what we know?”—to appreciate not only what becomes defined and recognized as a disease, but the power relationships that produce these effects. This program takes up current and historical examples to interrogate how the benefits of advances in science and medicine remain unequally shared, while exploring critical tools social scientists have offered as possible interventions.

This year we are offering three pathways for the Areté internship - Teaching, Arts, and STEM. All internship pathways allow high school students to explore career options, develop job readiness skills, and give back to the larger school community through service.

The Hk Maker Lab is an intensive six-week summer program to learn the foundations of design. Focusing on addressing a health problem, participants will design, prototype and test a biomedical device and develop an associated business plan. The program will culminate in a presentation to leading executives from the biomedical community. The Hk Maker Lab projects might then be incubated using the state-of-the-art facilities at Harlem Biospace.

The Biorocket Research Internship Program is a 6-month science research internship experience for New York City public and charter high school students age 16 and up. The program provides students with the opportunity to learn the latest advances in genetic engineering and biology laboratory skills, along with the science communication skills necessary to communicate about these topics with a variety of audiences.

The STEM Research Academy is a two‐semester program, consisting of a spring pre‐college science course and the opportunity to conduct hands-on research with CUNY faculty members in a summer research experience. The Academy is designed to provide students with an opportunity to build essential literacy and numeracy skills by engaging in ‘authentic inquiry’ activities.

This internship experience is not limited to young people who have a passion for art! The High School Internship Program allows you to connect one-on-one and in small cohorts with Museum professionals in a number of related fields, including editorial, marketing, social media, education, and more. During your time at The Met, you have the chance to find the intersection of your interests as you gain insights from peers and professionals.

The ACES internship provides an opportunity for students to connect practical experience, informal STEAM education and artistic play. ACES interns assist with Family Art Project, an intergenerational and multidisciplinary program for families to come together and make art inspired by nature at Wave Hill.

Ladders for Leaders is a nationally recognized program that offers outstanding high school and college students the opportunity to participate in paid professional summer internships with leading corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies in New York City. Ladders for Leaders is a component of NYC’s Summer Youth Employment Program, the nation’s largest summer jobs program.

Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors can intern with a diverse group of socially conscious peers to bring vital social connections to older adults. Through one of our four summer teen internship programs, you can develop leadership skills and engage in meaningful programs with older adults. Through a variety of intergenerational activities – including discussion groups, home visits, creative arts and tech assistance – you can give back to the community this summer while earning over 112 community service hours.

The Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) at the American Museum of Natural History is an opportunity for New York City high school students to conduct one year (August–June) of scientific research with Museum scientists. In SRMP, high school students get paid to learn how to conduct research.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s High School Internship Program is a rigorous internship that provides students with an insider’s view of the criminal justice system. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in workshops and discussions surrounding criminal justice, police brutality, civic engagement, leadership, and more. Program participants will take part in a series of presentations and conversations with staff in order to build a foundational understanding of how policies are developed and implemented, and of how academic and career paths can result in moving justice forward.
